Australian wildfires threaten Sydney - 13 NOV 2019

Officials in Australia have warned of ‘catastrophic’ conditions as bushfires burning for several days across New South Wales are forecast to spread to Sydney, one of the country’s largest cities.

The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office has issued a travel advice warning travellers of bushfires burning across NSW and extending into the Sunshine Coast region in Queensland, with residents being advised to evacuate.

Virgin and Qantas cancelled a number of flights between Sydney and the northern NSW towns of Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour on November 12 due to strong winds and significant visibility issues.

Qantas tweeted earlier today that weather in Sydney and northern NSW was affecting some services and advised customers to check their flight status.

The NSW Rural Fire Service says that, from November 12, the Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter regions will experience ‘catastrophic fire danger’, the highest possible level of risk. The service adds that people in at-risk areas should move to larger towns, shopping centres or facilities and keep away from bushland areas.

Three of the 70 blazes in the NSW area have been given an ‘emergency warning level’, which means that people are in urgent danger and need to take immediate action.
