UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: Hurricane Irma forces Florida flight cancellations - 08SEP17

Hurricane Irma is moving closer to south Florida, forcing airlines serving the region’s three main airports to cancel or delay flights yesterday and tourists to search for alternate accommodation, according to AccuWeather. Flight disruptions will be felt throughout the weekend.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport had 27 cancellations and 108 delays by late yesterday. At Miami International Airport, there were 26 cancelled flights as of 15h00. At Palm Beach International Airport, there were 38 flight delays listed shortly after 18h00.

Flight cancellations are expected to mount as Irma approaches Florida. It is expected to reach the state by tomorrow, September 8.

Orlando's international airport has said that commercial flights would stop from 17h00 local time on Saturday, September 9.

Aviation officials are reminding travellers to check with their respective airlines for up-to-date flight information before leaving for the airport.

Meanwhile, local tourism bureaus are stepping in to help travellers find alternative accommodations in the event they have to evacuate hotels in high-risk areas or are stranded in south Florida.

Major cruise operators are also cancelling, adjusting or rescheduling cruises.

South Florida’s seaports including Port Everglades are expected to be at “Port Condition X-Ray” hurricane status starting noon today.
