ORTIA to search people on arrival - 11 Jul 2017

People entering and leaving OR Tambo International Airport will be searched. This comes as police attempt to deal with rampant crime, including instances of so-called ‘follow-home crime’ at the airport, the county’s busiest port of entry.

Some of the other revised security strategies at the airport will see people working at the airport vetted and rotated to curb corruption, intensified tactical response, increased police and security personal.

“Everybody working here will be vetted and rotated. Those who are not needed will be asked to step aside. There will be extra deployment of personnel. The honeymoon is over for those stationed here for more than 10 years,” says Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula.

“Things won’t be business as usual. This new security strategy won’t be seasonal, but it is here to stay. The dangerous criminals must know we have an appointment with them. It is going to be a very horrible experience for them. If they come with their guns… they will meet our forces on the ground. This is not just war-talk, this is real,” he adds.

Agents should advise passengers of potential delays entering or leaving the airport and should allow for extra time when travelling.
